Schengen – Sierck les Bains – Réserve Naturelle de Montenach (29 km hike)
9 July 2022 @ 10:45 - 17:30
Please, note that this loop is substantially different from the one we did recently on a rainy winter day (Luxembourg – Germany – France).
This time we will be carrying out a more thorough exploration of what, in my opinion, constitute the most interesting spots of the longer Dreiländereck loop. However, on this occasion we will skip Germany altogether.
Starting from Schengen, we will head south along vineyards and magic forests heading to the Stromberg and visiting a few caves along the way. Right across the bridge, the French town of Sierck-les-Bain will be awaiting us in all its charming decadence. There, we will walk around the château des Ducs de Lorraine and pay a visit to the Jewish cemetery.
Keeping our southward course along the river Montenach should lead us to the National Natural Reserve of the same name. Finally, we will head back north along the ridges and the Altenberg.
This is a long hike with continuous ups and downs and therefore it requires a reasonable physical condition. That said, the elevation gain is very moderate as it ranges from 140 to a mere 330 metres. Furthermore, improvising, like we usually do, in France always involves a fair deal of cross-country segments, unexpected detours and difficult paths. So this one is for the adventurous hearts.
